Vanitha Narayanan is the Chairman of IBM India Private Limited. She was appointed to this leadership position in January 2017, to leverage her IBM experience and extensive market knowledge. Vanitha works with government, clients and the ecosystem to build strategic plans & the intersection of industry and technology. She spearheads transformational initiatives and plays a critical role in enhancing IBM’s significant footprint in India to serve Indian and global clients. A recognized thought leader and a technocrat, Vanitha work closely with the government and various industry bodies to influence policies and provide strategic insights.
Having joined IBM in the US in 1987, Vanitha has 30 years of experience working with multiple clients in several countries. In her first decade, she worked with large telecom clients in the US. During her second decade, Vanitha had global leadership roles in the telecom industry and has spent the past decade in leading major businesses in China and India.
In her earlier role as Managing Director of IBM India Private Limited and Regional General Manager of IBM India/ South Asia, Vanitha was responsible for all of IBM’s sales, marketing, services and global delivery operations in the India/South Asia region,
including Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. In 2012. Vanitha was inducted into the IBM Industry Academy, a select group of experts, designed to advance IBM’s industry thought leadership and brand. Vanitha is now an advisory board member of the Industry Academy.
Vanitha plays a significant role as a key influencer across industry bodies. She was the first woman chairperson of AMCHAM India (2015- 2016) and continues to serve as a member of the National Executive Board. She is the executive council member of
National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), distinguish invitee at All India Management Association (AIMA) and a director at the Catalyst India Advisory Board.She was the Chairperson of the Board of Governors for National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Suratkal (2014-2017). She was also a member of the National Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Co-Chair of National Committee for MNCs of Confederation of Indian Industry. Vanitha was named one of the ‘Most Powerful Women’ in Business in India (2014- 2017) by Business Today for 3 consecutive years, one of the 12 Global Indian Super Women of 2016 by CXOToday and conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Letters by the LNM Institute of Information Technology.
Vanitha is a liberal art major from Stella Maris College, Chennai. She has a Masters in Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Madras and a Masters in Business Administration in Information Systems from the University of Houston – Magna Cum Laude. Vanitha is married with a daughter and resides in Bangalore, India.
