Sean Emery

Sean is a seasoned entrepreneur and venture capitalist with a deep focus on emerging technologies, disruption and innovative business models. Since 2010, as Non-Executive Director of TSS Capital, Sean has pioneered investments in the Fintech industry in Africa. The majority of this time has been focused on taking an active CEO role on behalf of his investment firm in founding, South Africa’s first credit Marketplace tasked with disrupting the access to capital for SME’s and individuals across Africa. In this role as Co-Founder and CEO of RainFin Sean was responsible for the then largest investment by a financial institution into innovation in South Africa. Sean concluded the partial sale of the start-up RainFin to the Barclays Africa Group and the Investment of equity and debt of R200m by the group into the business to expand RainFin from SME and Consumer finance offering to build a utility for corporate debt and securitisations with multi-country capabilities.

Sean first started his journey in building and investing in disruptive technology platforms in 1999 when he founded the Procurement and Supply Chain E-Marketplace Over the period 1999 to 2005 Sean and the team built into one of the leading E-marketplaces globally in terms of transaction volumes, leading 50% of the Company to be acquired by the global mining marketplace Quadrem in 2003 and then as a collective the business was acquired by the Global firm SAP-Ariba in 2005.

Between 2005-2010 Sean was Corporate Finance and Strategy Director for Mondia Media Middle East a role responsible for managing the venture capital investments in “Disruptive New-Media” and Digital Entertainment strategy for the partnership Investment fund between Mondia limited and Abu Dhabi Investment Group. In the role, Sean grew the groups New Media assets from $30m to over $250m. Sean’s highlights during that time where acquiring Arvato Mobile a division of the Bertelsmann Global Media Group and building out a global new brand Mondia Media. Through the active management
and investment of the fund, Sean as acting CEO oversaw the growth of the business to 12 offices in 7 countries and employs 1 325 people and has Digital Entertainment revenues of Over USD150m per year. Sean was responsible for growing the company from its German, Italy and Brazil focus to a global organisation by overseeing the establishment of operations in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, these regions now contribute over 65% of the group’s profitability.

Sean is an active Director on a number of boards, and is in his private capacity is an active seed investor and has funded a number of disruptive start-ups in the media and technology spaces. Sean has been involved in disruptive industries for the past 20 years that specifically drive the open source economy and build the online marketplace through investment and innovation.
